Watch NCIS Season 19 Episode 14 “First Steps”
Previously on NCIS Season 19 Episode 13, while investigating the death of an intruder at Quantico, Jimmy and Kasie are exposed to a deadly biotoxin, and the NCIS team calls on Doctor Carol Wilson for help as they race to find the antidote. Also, Torres tries to distract Jimmy’s daughter, who came to the office to spend the day with her dad.

On NCIS Season 19 Episode 14, Dr. Tom Mashuda collapses while performing surgery on a patient. Dr. Mashuda has no pulse…
NCIS Director Vance calls Special Agent Torres into his office to ask him to shadow Kayla, his daughter on her first case. He assigns them Dr. Mashuda’s case thinking it will keep her out of harm’s way with any other dangerous cases.
S.As McGee, Knight, and Parker are talking with Kayla about her first day on the job when Torres comes in to tell Kayla they have their first case. According to the hospital’s Dr. Roth, the team arrives at the OR crime scene and finds out Dr. Masuda probably died of a heart attack.
Kayla recreates Dr. Masuda’s last moments. Medical Examiner Palmer says Dr. Masuda didn’t die of a heart attack but poisoning.
McGee, Torres, and Parker discuss Dr. Masuda’s case with Kayla. Knight brings in voicemails that Dr. Masuda received from Smitty Hastings, a bar owner. Knight and Torres go to Smitty’s bar and tell Kayla to stay in the car. They find Smitty and Kayla disobeys them when she walks into the bar.
Smitty tells them that Dr. Masuda was addicted to betting on ponies and Smitty has been out of town at his great aunt’s funeral. He tells them to check out Dr. Novak who Masuda was dating and wouldn’t let him break up with her.
Director Vance reprimands his daughter Kayla for leaving the car when she was ordered to stay inside. He pulls her out of the field. She says she deserves a chance to prove she is more than the Director’s daughter. He sends her to work in the lab.
Parker and Palmer discuss Dr. Masuda’s lab reports. The poison was from the skin of a frog and he wasn’t injected and he didn’t ingest it. He received it through a patch. The killer was in the OR with Dr. Masuda…
The team takes a closer look at the four people inside the OR when Dr. Masuda died. Dr. Angela Novak, the doctor’s girlfriend, was in the OR at the time of his death.
Parker and McGee question Dr. Angela about her not letting Dr. Masuda end their relationship. She tells them she loved him is all. She says the patient they were working on should have had a psych eval and Dr. Masuda overrides her orders and let the patient set the surgery time and date.
Knight and Kayla share stories of their fathers who don’t want them to work in dangerous jobs. Meanwhile, Torres speaks frankly to Director Vance about Kayla and explains that she needs to be in the field and in danger’s way if she is to be a good agent.
Dr. Masuda’s patient received a $100,000 deposit a day after the physician. dies. Torres tells Kayla she is back in the field and they go to question Dr. Masuda’s patient.
When the team arrives at the hospital, a code blue goes off in Dr. Masuda’s patient’s room. Kayla sees someone run out of the room and chases after them. The team chases after Kayla. The suspect rounds the corner with a gun to Kayla’s head. He shoves her into a van and a driver drives off!
The team and Director Vance have a meeting about Kayla. The team figures out that the kidnapper killed Dr. Masuda’s patient and ran out of the room, bumped into Kayla, and just took her.
Pedro, the kidnapper, and his partner Isaac question Kayla about who she is and what NCIS knows. She lies about her name but admits she is a rookie and knows nothing. Pedro gets a call and leaves Isaac alone with Kayla.
The team runs a facial recognition program on the kidnapper and finds out he is Pedro Rodriguez. Pedro is partnered with Jose Ortiz “El Santo” and they run a huge drug cartel. “El Santo” needed surgery and Dr. Masuda gave him a second opinion. Dr. Roth was going to be the surgeon that performed the surgery.
The team questions Dr. Roth who admits that Pedro blackmailed him. Pedro knew Dr. Roth was addicted to cocaine. He forced Dr. Roth to set up a fake surgery that they were going to use as a prison break for El Santo. Dr. Masuda denied the surgery saying nothing was wrong with El Santo.
Kayla and Isaac share small talk about his daughter. Pedro comes in angry because the prison transport has been canceled for El Santo. He shows Kayla her NCIS badge and knows she is NCIS Director Vance’s daughter now.
Pedro videocalls Director Vance and shows him Kayla bound and gagged. Pedro tells him he will exchange Kayla for El Santo and Director Vance has 3 hours or Kayla will be dead.
Forensic Scientist Hines finds very rare and expensive metals from the scene that could only come from an expensive recycling plant. It’s one of the cartel’s known distribution centers.
Director Vance tells the team he is going in with them. The team shows up at the recycling plant. They surround Isaac and Pedro. Pedro is killed when shots are fired. Isaac picks up Pedro’s gun and puts it on Kayla’s head. Kayla talks to him about his daughter and he lays it down. Director Vance runs to her and they embrace tearfully.
Kayla and her father have a serious heart-to-heart. He tells her that he transferred her to another field office. She needs to grow without his shadow looming over her…
